Unfortunately, garage doors are common break-in points for neighbourhood thieves. Here are a few things that can be done to improve the security of your garage door:

If you park outside, don't keep a garage door remote control inside the car.

Thieves can break into a car parked outside and use the remote control that's clipped to the sun visor or kept in the glove compartment to open the garage door. We recommend:

- Set-up your car's HomeLink® garage door control if it has one. HomeLink® controls work only when there's a key in the car, or
- Replace the visor remote with a mini-remote that attaches to a keychain and does not stay in your car.

Ensure your garage door opener has MyQ®.

MyQ® is an access control app that connects your Liftmaster garage door opener to your smartphone. MyQ® allows you to:

- Receive alerts on your smartphone when your garage door is opened or closed.
- Open or close your garage door using your smartphone.
- Set a timer-to-close to protect against your door being inadvertently left open.

Most Liftmaster garage door openers ≤5 years old have MyQ® capability built-in, and while some older ones may not, in many cases we can add MyQ® separately. Please contact us about your specific operator.

Thieves like to operate under cover of darkness. A wall control station with a motion detector linked to the lights of the garage door opener, and possibly additional remote LED lighting, can provide a sudden burst of light to deter an intruder.
